Re-Thinking the African University Postgraduate Curriculum: Towards De-Stabilising Eurocentric Dominance in Postgraduate Studies

African universities across the continent are all grappling with the idea of weaning themselves up from a Eurocentric curriculum, which is part of a colonial culture that is both oppressive and useless to the current realities of Africa. Given the mandate of universities to deliver and fulfill the promise of contributing to social justice, economic and social development, and democratic citizenship, postgraduate studies are strategically positioned to champion and challenge the Eurocentric dominance which continues troubling the political sanity and socio-economic development of Africa. That said, this paper discusses the topic of postgraduate studies in African universities, particularly its curriculum which remains gridlocked in the snarls of colonialism, when in fact postgraduate studies should provide space for independent and critical thinking while opening avenues for innovation and socio-economic development in Africa and elsewhere. It argues that re-thinking the African university postgraduate curriculum is critical and in fact peremptory to revolutionarise the postgraduate mind, change the narrative of Africa, relieve Africa of institutional capture, and improve the peoples of Africa's quality of life. The chapter concludes that Africa can only realise the practical benefits of postgraduate studies if and only if its African universities curricular are fully decolonised.
