The challenges of education in Mozambique in the digital age: from the memorization model to the development of student autonomy

Access to the Internet and the availability of materials on the web puts students in front of new thoughts and ideas, demonstrating that there are other possibilities for being in the world than those transmitted by the teacher. Innovative content is made available every second as a result of connectivity. In this context, this study aims to identify the challenges of education in Mozambique in the digital age and to understand the reasons for the need to replace the memorization model with the model of developing student autonomy. This is a qualitative study based on bibliographical research. The results show that there are insufficient technological resources and infrastructures, poor budget allocations and a lack of teacher training in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the Teaching and Learning Process (TEP). They also noted the persistent use of the memorization model, which does not allow for the construction of knowledge, thus forcing students to memorize, recite and memorize the content covered in class. These scenarios may be linked to poverty and regional socio-economic inequalities, and ICTs may therefore be the right tools for developing student autonomy and, consequently, improving the quality of teaching and learning sought by the country.
